1960 Triumph Italia 2000 GT
Triumph built four cars for 1960, with wider tracks, rack-and-pinion steering, and the same "Sabrina" engine, fed by twin-choke SU carburetors. At Le Mans, with one car retained as a spare, the trio of Triumphs managed to finish at 15th, 18th and 19th overall, yet failed to cover the minimum distance required.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Triumph sold a succession of Michelotti-styled saloons and sports cars, including the advanced Dolomite Sprint, which, in 1973, already had a 16-valve four cylinder engine. It is alleged that many Triumphs of this era were unreliable, especially the 2.5 PI (petrol injection) with its fuel injection problems.

Michelotti's styling of the TR4 was the epitome of the 1960's classic sports car. Triumph began planning a successor to the TR3 as early as 1956. At the time, the company was facing a number of challenges. Lack of capital to fund development was partly relieved by the sale of Triumph's tractor division to Massey-Harris of Canada.
